How should kids’ cleats fit?

Just like all shoes, comfort is key when it comes to finding the perfect size in kids’ or toddlers’ cleats. Ensure that your child’s foot fits snugly in their cleat without feeling overly tight or uncomfortable.

You can feel for their toe through the top of the shoe. Look for about a quarter-inch space between their toes and the front of their shoes. This should allow for enough space to keep them comfortable, but not so much that their foot will slide around in their shoe.

Generally speaking, your kids’ cleats should be approximately the same size as their standard shoe size. However, it’s always best to try a few different sizes to find one that works best.

Are metal or molded cleats better for children?

When it comes to youth cleats, you have two main options: metal or molded.

Metal cleats: Metal cleats have metal spikes attached to the bottom to allow for optimal grip. These are the best in terms of traction on the field. However, metal cleats can be dangerous for kids as they can accidentally hurt each other with the sharp cleats during play. In fact, many youth leagues ban metal cleats altogether.

Molded cleats: Molded cleats, on the other hand, have plastic or rubber studs at the bottom. These are a much safer option for kids’ cleats, as there’s no risk of harm.

What should I look for when buying youth cleats?

When shopping for children’s cleats, there are a few things to look for:

Support: Look for a cleat that holds your child’s feet securely. Synthetic materials are a great choice, as they offer much less stretch than leather and will maintain their supportiveness over time.

Traction: The whole purpose of cleats is to grip the ground and minimize accidental slips and tumbles. Look for cleats that offer your child good traction while still remaining safe and within the guidelines of your youth league.

Comfort: Of course, comfort is a huge consideration! Make sure your child has enough room in the toe box to wiggle their toes and make sure the shape feels good for them. A comfy player is a good player!

How can I break in new children's cleats?

Just like new shoes, cleats can be uncomfortable for the first few wears. You can begin the process of breaking in your child’s cleats by having them wear the cleats around the house for a few days. Of course, make sure they won’t damage your floors, first!

You can also have your kid double up on socks to increase the size of their feet and speed up the breaking-in process. It may be temporarily uncomfortable, but will result in a comfier children’s cleat in the long run!
